Father Bill Mudge recognized the need to strengthen the link between prison and community while working as Chaplain at William Head Institution in 1974. He reached out to people and groups in the greater community and realized his vision through the formation of the Laren Society. In 1977, the Laren Society began managing a Community Living House (halfway house) in Victoria, British Columbia. The Society's history remains deeply rooted in the concepts of family and community; that we are all interconnected as brothers and sisters and we are all capable of turning our lives around from the inside out.

Board of Directors:

Meets monthly and is responsible for ensuring excellent management of the organization, including budget administration, Society membership, fundraising, and long-term planning. Major decisions are discussed and debated in pursuit of public safety and the successful integration of men in transition from prison to community.

The Bill Mudge House:

Central to the success of conditional release and public safety is the role that community living facilities fulfill for Corrections Canada. The Bill Mudge House employs a holistic approach in helping residents attain a balance within themselves and the community. Life at the house is an experiential program; it is group living in a supportive empowering environment which provides residents with an opportunity to re-establish themselves in the community and move to a self-supporting living situation.

Positive relationships make the transition meaningful and are the fabric which most directly affects the healing process. Our caseworkers as part of the resident support team are professional, experienced and committed to working with individuals in developing and achieving their goals.
